My Story

Nance and I will be running London Marathon 2026 for the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation (DRWF).
At the start of this year we could barely run for 5 minutes (not a joke) but have stuck at it and have started actually enjoying most of our runs! We trained for and ran a 10K race in May, and nance ran the Ealing half in September. The marathon training plans start early December EEK!

Our why:
In April 2024, our brother Will was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 15. T1D is an autoimmune disease whereby the pancreas fails to produce insulin and treatment is required for life. It can be diagnosed at any age but is most common in children and young adults. On Easter weekend, Will was rushed into Torbay hospital with severe diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious complication of type 1 that can be life threatening if left untreated. After a short stay in hospital, a crash course in how to correct hypos and hypers, and armed with a sensor and insulin, he came home. Type 1 diabetes is something none of our family knew much about, but very quickly became something we talk about multiple times a day.

There are 4 key symptoms to watch out for and they can come on in just a few days:
Toilet- going for a wee more often, especially at night
Thirsty- being constantly thirsty
Tired- being incredibly tired and having no energy
Thinner- losing weight without trying to

DRWF is a charity that funds research in the UK and around the world to understand the causes and treatment, as well as provide support for those living with diabetes. Their ultimate goal is to fund research that WILL one day find a cure.

As beginner runners, training for and running a marathon will be a real challenge for us but doesn’t compare to the many challenges Will has faced over the past year and will continue to conquer for the rest of his life. He has handled everything like an absolute legend.

Will, you are an inspiration to everyone that knows you and we are so so proud of you.
Every mile we run will be for you and for everyone living with type 1 diabetes.
