My Story
Our world was flipped upside down on 28th November 2024 when our 7-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Thankfully, she was diagnosed promptly and started her insulin journey before she became really poorly.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-changing autoimmune condition; there is no cure.
Unbeknownst to us, Im was born with the antibodies, then at some stage, not long before diagnosis, her own body had decided to attack the cells in her pancreas that create insulin. There is nothing she/we could have done to prevent this. It is not down to diet or lifestyle, unlike Type 2. She will now have multiple daily injections of insulin every time she wants to eat, for the rest of her life.
Im and I wanted to do something so that hopefully one day in the not-so-distant future, there will be a cure. As well as the Great South Run, she is also taking part in a research study so that Type 1 is better understood and preventative measures can be given to those who have antibodies long before symptoms appear in the hopes they can lead a normal life for longer.
